How to Diagnose a Washing Machine Problem Before Calling

   Note the error code and look it up

   Most modern washers display a fault code. Search your model number plus the code — many are user-clearable by running a drain-and-spin cycle or resetting the breaker.

   Inspect the drain pump filter

   A clogged pump filter is the top cause of washers that won't drain. It's typically behind a small access panel at the front bottom of the machine; clear it into a bucket.

   Rebalance the load

   An off-balance load triggers an automatic shutoff that looks exactly like a mechanical failure. Redistribute the clothes, close the door firmly, and retry spin.

   Verify the water supply valves are open

   If the machine won't fill, confirm both hot and cold supply valves behind the washer are fully open and the inlet screens aren't clogged with sediment.

   Call a technician if you see leaks or hear grinding

   Water leaking from the drum seam or a grinding noise during spin indicates a bearing, seal, or spider-arm failure — DIY repair risks flooding and further damage.
